With Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season just around the corner, we want to know: do you prefer snacks over flowers? Because we definitely do! If your answer is also yes, you’re going to absolutely love our March Bokksu! This month, to celebrate the upcoming Spring renewal, we’ve curated delicious, blossom-flavored snacks such as Ume Sablé (plum shortbread cookie), Sakura Rusk, and many other seasonal delights.

Honestly speaking, March is my favorite month of the year! The gloomy Winter weather fades away, and the beautiful blossoms of new life begin to appear. Best of all, it’s the season for Hanami! Hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, is a widely anticipated and highly inebriated event where people welcome the arrival of Spring by consuming copious amounts of food and drink under blooming sakura (cherry blossoms) trees.

That’s why I am so excited to announce our March theme: Snacks Over Flowers ( Hana Yori Dango)!

Literally translated, the Japanese idiom Hana Yori Dango (花より団子) means “food is better than flowers”. This old saying advises one to prefer substantial, practical items such as food over decorative, ephemeral items such as flowers. On a fun pop culture note, the name of the widely popular Japanese manga and TV series, Boys Over Flowers (花より男子, Hana Yori Dango) is actually a pun on this idiom since 団子 ( dango, food) and 男子 ( dango, boys) are homophones in Japanese.
