Black Sesame Taiko: Kumamon Design

Black Sesame Taiko: Kumamon Design

Manufacturer: Iwata Corporation
Common Allergens: Tree nuts, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Kumamoto Prefecture
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

Kumamon is here to make you fall in love with Kumamoto Prefecture! Made with fragrant roasted almonds, black sesame, and mizuame, this black sesame taiko is scrumptious. We love the crunchy texture and the way the sweet mizuame mingles with those yummy nutty notes. Each little “drum” is actually handmade in Kumamoto! First, the almonds and sesame are roasted, and then mixed by hand with the mizuame over heat. After mixing, it’s hand-pressed into discs and left to cool. They say one drum provides you with a full day’s worth of sesame.

Usagi Chocolate Ball

Usagi Chocolate Ball

Manufacturer: Newest
Common Allergens: Milk
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Osaka
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

We had to include these cute mini chocolates for their festive rabbit design! They have a sugary outer shell and rich cocoa center. This snack was inspired by one of Japan’s most famous folktales: Tsuki no Usagi, “The Rabbit on the Moon”, which is often told to children during Otsukimi while gazing at the full moon. There’s even a children’s song called Usagi meaning “rabbit”!

Rich Baked Chocolat

Rich Baked Chocolat

Manufacturer: Nakajima Taishodo
Common Allergens: Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: Alcohol
Product of: Osaka
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

This rich dark chocolate cake is absolutely decadent thanks to the use of couverture chocolate, which contains a higher percentage of cocoa butter than the standard chocolate used in baking. Each bite opens with a creamy and intense chocolatey flavor and finishes with a splash of rum finishes that adds an aromatic note.

Chocolate Azuki Beans: Black Sesame Kinako

Chocolate Azuki Beans: Black Sesame Kinako

Manufacturer: Denroku
Common Allergens: Milk, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Yamagata Prefecture
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

The first step in creating this addictive treat is simmering azuki in sugar syrup to make amanatto using a traditional process first created in the 1860s. However, snackmaker Denroku adds a modern twist by coating the beans with white chocolate and then finishing them with goma (black sesame) and kinako (roasted soybean powder). The kinako flavor stole our hearts away with its nutty, peanut buttery taste. Thanks to this innovative maker, the humble azuki bean has been transformed into a creamy, dreamy confection.

OFU: Fukairi Shichimi

OFU Smoked Crackers and Peanuts: Fukairi Shichimi Seven-Flavor

Manufacturer: Itofu
Common Allergens: Peanuts, Wheat, Soybeans
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Kyoto
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: Yes

Using ofu (Japanese wheat-gluten) and seasoning from Kyoto, this perfectly baked assortment of smoked crackers and peanuts should be named UFO instead because it takes you to the moon! Ofu is another common alternative to tofu in Buddhist cuisine and is loved for being more flavorful and with a more dense texture than tofu. Thanks to the balance of peanuts, the seven-spice shichimi flavoring is heavy but not overpowering.

Black Sesame Genmai: Honey Soy Sauce Flavor

Black Sesame Genmai Rice Cracker: Honey Soy Sauce Flavor

Manufacturer: Kingodo
Common Allergens: Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Tokyo
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: Yes

This special rice cracker is made with goma (black sesame) and genmai (brown rice) baked into it. The unique earthy flavor and pure sesame taste are impossible to miss! There is a delightful coating of honey soy sauce that give a sweet spin on something we would normally expect only from umami. When you take your first bite, focus on the earthy tones of the snack and the toasty flavor of roasted brown rice will reveal itself to you!

Kuromame Tea

Kuromame Black Bean Tea

Manufacturer: Ikeda Confectionary
Common Allergens: Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Hokkaido
Vegetarian: Yes

Warm and earthy in fragrance, this caffeine-free kuromame (black bean) tea is a fantastic companion to the summer festival season. Unlike other teas we've included in our boxes, this is the first tea we've curated that's entirely soybean! Open and place the whole bag of soybeans into a cup of boiled water and drink up! Afterward, you'll have a treat to eat as you can eat the soybeans that cooked in your hot water steeping.

Organic Drip Tea: Full Moon Tea

Organic Drip Tea: Full Moon Tea

Manufacturer: Taruwakien
Common Allergens: N/A
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Shizuoka Prefecture
Vegetarian: Yes

Fresh, full green tea leaves clean and simple in flavor. This tea shows off just why Shizuoka prefecture is known for having some of the highest quality green tea in all of Japan and the world. The name “Full Moon” tea comes from how the leaves are harvested within the 7 days before the full moon, where the tea is able to get a rich aroma and umami flavor by this particular harvesting practice. For those interested in the rhythm of the moon, you can find this tea to be especially energizing.

Scone: Barbeque Flavor

Scone: Barbeque Flavor

Manufacturer: Koikeya
Common Allergens: Milk, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Tokyo

This scone is anything but sweet! The barbecue flavor on this corn snack is delightfully saucy and the perfect pairing for enjoying the moon festival. A ten out of ten in both texture and flavor, this snack has a grilled corn and barbecue taste that is complementary to any summertime event. The crunch will also make this the first thing you want to grab all the time!

Mitarashi Mochi

Mitarashi Mochi

Manufacturer: Kubota Seika
Common Allergens: Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Nagano Prefecture
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: No

This chewy mochi is inspired by a traditional Japanese specialty: Mitarashi Dango! Originally from Kyoto, Mitarashi Dango is made with mochi that is grilled on a skewer and has a sweet soy sauce glaze. Dango is a popular street food throughout Japan, especially around the holidays. With a pull-able mochi outside and sweet soy sauce filling, this mochi turns a traditional snack into a portable delight!

Nure-Agesen: Katsuo and Ume Flavor

Nure-Agesen: Katsuo + Ume Plum Flavor

Manufacturer: Shingura
Common Allergens: Milk, Fish, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Chiba Prefecture
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: No

Team Bokksu absolutely adores all types of Japanese rice crackers, which is why we are thrilled to introduce the nure-agesen (moist rice cracker)! This beautifully-wrapped senbei is a little different from our usual crunchy variety that we feature in our boxes. Instead of the normal snap you might expect when biting into this snack, this cracker has a little bit more of a satisfying tear. Thanks to the added traditional flavors of ume (dried plum) and katsuo (skipjack tuna) flavor, you’ll be so enraptured with the umami flavors that you’ll be polishing the bag off in no time!

Gudetama Golden Pack: Tamago Kake Gohan Flavor

Gudetama Golden Pack: Tamago Kake Gohan Flavor

Manufacturer: Nippoh Seika
Common Allergens: Eggs, Fish, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Chiba Prefecture
Snack is: Savory
Vegetarian: No

Sassy and lazy, Gudetama is a Sanrio character beloved in Japan and across the world! Because Gudetama is Japan’s most famous egg, we had to include him in our Moon Festival Bokksu. There are many Japanese dishes that feature a raw or fried egg and are called tsukimi because the egg looks like the full moon. This particular snack is fluffy, puffy, and flavored like the Japanese comfort food tamago kake gohan, which features hot rice, soy sauce, and a raw egg stirred into it. This puff stick has all the savory kick we’d expect with subtle notes of seaweed, sesame, and sugar from the furikake.

Hakata Mitsuki: Delicious Cheese Financier

Hakata Mitsuki: Delicious Cheese Financier Cake

Manufacturer: Hakata Fubian
Common Allergens: Milk, Eggs, Tree nuts, Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Fukuoka Prefecture
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

This adorable crescent-shaped financier cake is named for the beautiful moon over Hakata, a neighborhood in Fukuoka. It has a delicate texture with a golden, buttery outside. The maker takes the traditional almond-based batter of a financier cake and adds a subtle savory note with the addition of cheese. Semi-sweet and rich in flavor, this little number keeps us wanting more!

Funwari Meijin Mochi Puffs: Kuromitsu Black Syrup Kinako

These airy Kuromitsu Kinako Mochi Puffs will melt in your mouth, leaving you with the delicious flavor of kinako (roasted soybean), brown sugar, and a hint of chocolate. Kuromitsu literally means "black honey" or "black sugar syrup", and is the word used for Japanese brown sugar syrup. These mochi are made with 100% Japanese mochigome rice that are pounded and transformed using a unique patented process into lighter-than-air confections. Afterwards, they are covered in brown sugar syrup, cocoa powder, and kinako powder for a sweet and nutty flavor!

Instead of the traditional red bean filling, this fluffy manju from Akita Prefecture is stuffed with white bean and cheese, which results in a smooth and light flavor that is perfect to enjoy with a cup of tea. The excited smiling face on the manju is the perfect reflection of how you'll be feeling after taking a bite of this treat!

Usuyaki Shokunin Chibisuke: Consomme Black Pepper Flavor

Usuyaki Shokunin Chibisuke: Consomme Black Pepper Flavor

Manufacturer: Sakata beika
Common Allergens: Wheat, Soy
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Yamagata Prefecture
Snack is: Savory

Inspired by the flavorful clear soup consomme that is made from bouillon, this snack is powerfully peppery. While consomme can sometimes be served chilled, the added black pepper in this snack makes that variation a distant memory and will give your tongue just a little heat and maybe a kick in the pants.
