Mochi is a traditional Japanese rice cake made by pounding steamed mochigome (glutinous mochi rice). After being sweetened and flavored, it’s rolled in rice flour to keep it from sticking. Mochi is a classic hanami (flower viewing) snack and is perfect for enjoying on a warm spring day beneath the cherry blossoms with a cup of green tea. The mochi we’ve chosen this month is sakura-flavored just for this blossoming season!

Nata de Coco Peach Gummy

Nata De Coco Peach Gummy

The smell of peaches in the air is a sure sign of warmer weather in Japan and the inclusion of the tropical Nata de coco is perfect for springing your taste buds into action this spring! Coming in tiny bite-sized cubes, these delightful little gummies have the most perfect chewy texture. We suspect that’s due to the delicious coconut that gives the snack its name. The special pink gummies are the mascot, Gummio-san, so look closely to see his cheery face.

Manufacturer: Nakajima Taishodo
Common Allergens: Milk, Eggs, Wheat, Soy

This delicate delight is one of our favorite spring-time treats. We first tried this crepe in April 2018, and people loved them so much, we just had to bring them back! A wafer-thin crepe is baked and rolled up for crisp layers. It’s then enrobed in a decadent coating of white-chocolate infused with powdered sakura petals for a richer flavor and color.

Handmade Sakura Candy

Common Allergens: None
Also Contains: N/A
Product of: Kyoto
Snack is: Sweet
Vegetarian: Yes

It’s sakura season, and we’re so excited to bring you this Handmade Sakura Candy made exclusively for Bokksu! Sakura in Japan symbolizes ephemerality and the fleeting quality of life. Like the sakura that fades away at the end of the season, this candy dissolves lightly on the palette. Sweet and floral, cherry blossoms are harvested and prepared by pickling and drying the flowers in salt. This traditional method preserves the vibrant color and flavor of sakura, which makes it perfect for candy and is why this Handmade Sakura Candy contains real bits of preserved sakura!

This dense and cake-like waffle is flavored with sugar, but not just any sugar! Wasanbon is a traditional Japanese sugar from the Shikoku region of Japan. It’s usually used in wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets. It is golden in color, and has a more complex flavor than white sugar. This maker took care not to mix in the sugar too evenly, so as you eat there are pockets where the sugar crystals are more concentrated to allow their flavor to shine through.
